Average of Five People
It’s a popular saying that you are the average of the five people you spend most time with. My modern, internet-based version is that you are a product of the bubble you live in.
I bet you didn’t even know that you were living in a bubble, did you? Well, it’s true. You are living in a bubble – an information bubble. More accurately, it’s a filter bubble.
All About The Filter Bubble
The way it works online is like this: We spend a lot of our time in smart systems like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google Search and more. These systems study our behaviour and understand what we like and what we don’t. Then, they customize our experience accordingly. Same thing works with cookies and ads – trust me, I’m a marketer.
Is The Bubble Bad?
The filter bubble is not entirely a bad thing – it makes our life comfortable and convenient.
But, despite the many benefits, it’s absolutely essential that you burst your bubble.
You filter bubble is a limited and a fake world. It’s a personalized experience that’s built according to our wishes. It’s an echo chamber where all our view points and beliefs are reinforced and conflicting views are buried. (Take a look at your Facebook feed – you only get more and more of the stuff you like.)
This leads to a lack of diversity and competition – and we end up looking/following the same things as everyone else in our social circle.
Burst Your Bubble
It’s a trap. Don’t get stuck. Burst your bubble.
Learn to think for yourself, even if you agree. Especially if you agree.
Be the devil’s advocate. Be your own red team. Evolve to hear out an idea without accepting it.
Dear the left,
Your people fill the higher institutions of culture.
You control Silicon Valley.
You control Hollywood & the music industry.
You control the art world.
You control popular culture.
You witch hunt, shame & fire anyone who transgresses your identity politics dogma.
And yet you still claim to be counter-cultural dissidents ‘fighting the establishment’, ‘railing against the mainstream’.
You’re not the counter-culture. You’re not dissidents.
You are the ultimate conformists. You are the mainstream. You are the establishment.
